That the only major omission of this compilation comes right at the end makes it less problematic, but it is unfortunate that the only game not included is the best one. It’s pretty simplistic but it features the neon graphic style of Pac-Man Championship Edition and including it for the sake of completion is exactly the sort of effort we wish other compilations would go to. This is a four-player game where you’re trying to eat the other players and we’ve never even heard of it before. There were also super pellets to turn Pac-Man into a giant, but the game was not a success and only a few home conversions were attempted.įrom there the compilation moves onto 1983’s Pac & Pal, which features a friendly ghost that helps you collect food, and power-ups that let Pac-Man shoot ghosts instead of eating them. The closest Namco themselves ever came to a sequel was Super Pac-Man, which altered the gameplay so that you were collecting keys to open doors to eat the food behind them.

(The fact that none of this is even hinted at in the game is why the lack of any historical information is such a shame.) The presentation is fine in general, but it’s more interested in having you unlock special stamps for completing Achievement-like tasks.
